The same game, with the list sent from school
Spellbeasts is in beta with families now, and the schools side comes next. This is how it will work. None of it is switched on yet.
Lists arrive by themselves
A teacher sets the week's list, with its test day, for the class. Every child who has joined gets it that morning, and nobody at home types it in. Parents can still add lists of their own.
Joining is always approved
A teacher shares a join code. A parent enters it for their child, which asks to join, and the teacher says yes or no. A code on its own gets nobody in. Codes run out, and can be switched off at once if one gets passed around.
What the class finds hard
Which of this week's words the class is struggling with, and the kind of mistake: doubled letters, endings, the vowel in the middle. Enough to know what to go over before the test. Who has practised comes first, before anyone's score.
Built for the child who finds it hard
Children never see each other's progress. Scoreboards are off unless a grown-up switches them on, and even then show only the made-up name a child picked in the app. The words used are "still working on", never "failed".
Very little about each child
A first name and a year group. No email address, no photos. Children's records are held in the UK. The school is in charge of its pupils' data: we sign a data processing agreement and give you what you need for a DPIA.
From one year to the next
Classes move up when the school says so, never on their own. A child who leaves a class keeps their creatures and their spelling history, and the class no longer sees them.
